    Social Networking in Education

    Social networking has become one of the most popular communication tools to have evolved over the past decade, making it a powerful new information sharing resource in society. To date realising the potential of Social Networking Sites (SNSs) beyond their leisure uses has been severely restricted in a number of areas. This paper focuses on the application of SNSs in a learning environment and the impact this could have on academic practices. While undoubtedly, due to the very casual nature of social networking, there are serious concerns over how it could be integrated in a learning environment; the potential positive outcomes are many and varied. As a communication tool, its effectiveness is already manifesting in the millions who use these networks to communicate on a daily basis. So it is conceivable that educators should be able to create a learnscape - an environment for formal and informal learning - that adheres to educational guidelines, but also harnesses the social support system of these on-line communities. This paper examines the risks involved in the creation of this new learning ecology, and explores the challenges faced by both technology experts and teachers in delivering a truly innovative and effective new approach to education.</p

    Large-signal dynamic behavior of distributed-feedback lasers including lateral effects

    The large-signal behavior of DFB lasers is analyzed, including lateral as well as longitudinal variations in carrier density, photon density, and refractive index. The effective index method and other approximations are used to reduce the complex three-dimensional problem to one dimension. The coupled wave and carrier rate equations are then solved in a self-consistent manner. Lateral spatial carrier hole burning and lateral diffusion are found to affect the relaxation oscillation frequency and damping rate of DFB lasers, depending on their detailed structure. The effective time-averaged linewidth enhancement factor is also affected. In symmetric AR-coated λ/4 phase-shifted lasers the side mode suppression ratio can be deteriorated significantly by lateral spatial hole burning when kL is large.published_or_final_versio

    Observational study of the association of first insulin type in uncontrolled type 2 diabetes with macrovascular and microvascular disease

    &lt;p&gt;Aims: To compare the risk of vascular disease, HbA1c and weight change, between first prescribed insulins in people with type 2 diabetes.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Methods: People included in THIN United Kingdom primary care record database who began insulin (2000–2007) after poor control on oral glucose-lowering agents (OGLD) were grouped by the number of OGLDs in their treatment regimen immediately before starting insulin (n = 3,485). Within OGLD group, Cox regression compared macrovascular (all-cause mortality, myocardial infarction, acute coronary syndrome and stroke) and microvascular disease (peripheral neuropathy, nephropathy, and retinopathy) between insulin type (basal, pre-mix or Neutral Protamine Hagedorn, NPH) while ANCOVAs compared haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and weight change.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Results: Mean follow-up was 3.6 years. Rates of incident macrovascular events were similar when basal insulin was compared to pre-mix or NPH, adjusted hazard ratio versus basal: pre-mix 1.08 (95% CI 0.73, 1.59); NPH 1.00 (0.63, 1.58) after two OGLDs, and pre-mix 0.97 (0.46, 2.02); NPH 0.77 (0.32, 1.86) after three OGLDs. An increased risk of microvascular disease in NPH versus basal after 3 OGLDs, adjusted hazard ratio1.87 (1.04, 3.36), was not seen after two agents or in comparisons of basal and pre-mix. At one year, after two OGLDs, weight increase was less with basal compared with pre-mix. After three OGLDs, mean HbA1c had reduced less in basal versus pre-mix or NPH at 6–8 and at 9–11 months, and versus pre-mix at 12–14 months.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Conclusion: We found no difference in the risk of macrovascular events between first insulins in the medium term when started during poor glycaemia control. The increased risk of microvascular events with NPH warrants further study. In certain groups, first use of basal insulin was associated with less gain in weight and decrease in HbA1c compared to other insulins.&lt;/p&gt

    The role of insulin-like growth factors signaling in merlin-deficient human schwannomas.

    Loss of the tumor suppressor merlin causes development of the tumors of the nervous system, such as schwannomas, meningiomas, and ependymomas occurring spontaneously or as part of a hereditary disease Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2). Current therapies, (radio) surgery, are not always effective. Therefore, there is a need for drug treatments for these tumors. Schwannomas are the most frequent of merlin-deficient tumors and are hallmark for NF2. Using our in vitro human schwannoma model, we demonstrated that merlin-deficiency leads to increased proliferation, cell-matrix adhesion, and survival. Increased proliferation due to strong activation of extracellular-signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) is caused by overexpression/activation of platelet-derived growth factor receptor-β (PDGFR-β) and ErbB2/3 which we successfully blocked with AZD6244, sorafenib, or lapatinib. Schwannoma basal proliferation is, however, only partly dependent on PDGFR-β and is completely independent of ErbB2/3. Moreover, the mechanisms underlying pathological cell-matrix adhesion and survival of schwannoma cells are still not fully understood. Here, we demonstrate that insulin-like growth factor-I receptor (IGF-IR) is strongly overexpressed and activated in human primary schwannoma cells. IGF-I and -II are overexpressed and released from schwannoma cells. We show that ERK1/2 is relevant for IGF-I-mediated increase in proliferation and cell-matrix adhesion, c-Jun N-terminal kinases for increased proliferation and AKT for survival. We demonstrate new mechanisms involved in increased basal proliferation, cell-matrix adhesion, and survival of schwannoma cells. We identified therapeutic targets IGF-IR and downstream PI3K for treatment of schwannoma and other merlin-deficient tumors and show usefulness of small molecule inhibitors in our model. PI3K is relevant for both IGF-IR and previously described PDGFR-β signaling in schwannoma

    Cosmological Birefringence: an Astrophysical test of Fundamental Physics

    We review the methods used to test for the existence of cosmological birefringence, i.e. a rotation of the plane of linear polarization for electromagnetic radiation traveling over cosmological distances, which might arise in a number of important contexts involving the violation of fundamental physical principles. The main methods use: (1) the radio polarization of radio galaxies and quasars, (2) the ultraviolet polarization of radio galaxies, and (3) the cosmic microwave background polarization.     Distinct Binding and Immunogenic Properties of the Gonococcal Homologue of Meningococcal Factor H Binding Protein

    Neisseria meningitidis is a leading cause of sepsis and meningitis. The bacterium recruits factor H (fH), a negative regulator of the complement system, to its surface via fH binding protein (fHbp), providing a mechanism to avoid complement-mediated killing. fHbp is an important antigen that elicits protective immunity against the meningococcus and has been divided into three different variant groups, V1, V2 and V3, or families A and B. However, immunisation with fHbp V1 does not result in cross-protection against V2 and V3 and vice versa. Furthermore, high affinity binding of fH could impair immune responses against fHbp. Here, we investigate a homologue of fHbp in Neisseria gonorrhoeae, designated as Gonococcal homologue of fHbp (Ghfp) which we show is a promising vaccine candidate for N. meningitidis. We demonstrate that Gfhp is not expressed on the surface of the gonococcus and, despite its high level of identity with fHbp, does not bind fH. Substitution of only two amino acids in Ghfp is sufficient to confer fH binding, while the corresponding residues in V3 fHbp are essential for high affinity fH binding. Furthermore, immune responses against Ghfp recognise V1, V2 and V3 fHbps expressed by a range of clinical isolates, and have serum bactericidal activity against N. meningitidis expressing fHbps from all variant groups

    Textile industry manufacturing by-products induce human melanoma cell proliferation via ERK1/2 activation

    OBJECTIVES: Textiles used to make clothing can represent a source, often ignored, of chemicals potentially noxious to both skin and the whole organism. Among the most frequently produced potentially noxious chemical manufacturing by-products are formaldehyde (FA), nickel (Ni) and hexavalent chromium (Cr); they are of potential clinical interest as all are known to be carcinogenic to humans and to be potent skin sensitizers. The aim of this study was to investigate, in vitro, effects of these potentially dangerous compounds on two different melanoma cell lines. In particular, attention was focused on A375P, a poorly metastatic and low invasive cell line and SK-MEL-28, a highly metastatic cell line. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Effects of these compounds was evaluated on A375P and SK-MEL-28 cells. FA (1-5 7 10(-5) m), NiSO4 (10(-6) -10(-3) m), K2 Cr2 O7 (10(-7) -10(-6) m) effects on cell proliferation were evaluated by cell counting, while ERK pathway involvement was evaluated by Western blot analysis. RESULTS: Low concentrations of the chemicals, covering a range that corresponds to commonly accepted limits in textile production, induced a significant increase in cell proliferation concomitant with transient activation of phosphorylated ERK expression. CONCLUSIONS: Data obtained suggest that increasing attention must be focused on these by-products' potentially harmful effects in chemical manufacturing of clothes and accessories, that remain for long periods of time, in contact with human skin
